Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound
Noninvasive Tests for Neurological Treatment and Diagnosis in Maryland
Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound is used to detect blood flow in the brain via sound waves. This noninvasive neurological test helps to assess and diagnose neurological conditions that may affect blood flow and help monitor treatments that may affect blood flow. It is used in the treatment and assessment of strokes, narrowing of the blood vessels, stenosis, embolisms, sickle-cell anemia, and more.
With two neurological offices in Maryland, Neurological Medicine, P.A. offers transcranial Doppler tests in both Greenbelt and Laurel, MD. Our neurologists and staff can help schedule your appointment, administer the test, and consult on the results.
Our aim is compassionate care, always. Call today to learn more and set up your appointment.
What is a Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound?
A Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound uses sound waves to monitor the blood flow inside the brain. It is a non-invasive and painless neurological test that can be done in-office as an outpatient procedure.
Also known as TCD, the test works by recording and monitoring how the sound waves reflect off of blood cells moving through the blood vessels. The sound waves are recorded and a radiologist or neurologist will interrupt and consult on the results of the test.
How Can a Transcranial Doppler Help
Transcranial Doppler Tests are used to help in assessing disorders, illnesses, and treatments that may affect the blood vessels in the brain. You may be advised to get a Transcranial Doppler Test if any of the following conditions apply to you or are a concern of your physician:
- Stroke
- Narrowing of the Blood Vessels
- Stenosis
- Blood Clots
- Sickle Cell Anemia
- Embolism
- Cerebral Circulatory Arrest
- Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH)
What to Expect During Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound Imaging
There is no special preparation required for a transcranial doppler test. In most cases, patients do not need to change into a hospital gown or remove any clothing. As always, clothing that is comfortable and has a relaxed fit is best for relaxation and mobility when needed. You may be asked to remove any necklaces and wear shirts that leave the neck easily accessible. Please refrain from applying any make-up, especially around the areas of the face that will be examined.
For the exam, you will be asked to sit or lie down on an examining table. A light gel will be applied to the locations where the ultrasound will be used for examination. The gel does not harm the skin, stain clothes, or cause any side effects.
The gel may be applied to the back of the neck, above the cheekbones, in front of the ear, or over an eyelid near the temple – these are where the blood vessels are that supply the brain that will be monitored. After the test, the gel will be gently removed and wiped away.
The ultrasound wand, called a transducer, is held in place on the exam areas. Patients should expect to feel light pressure from the transducer but no pain or discomfort. Patients will be asked to stay still and refrain from talking during the exam. You will hear the sound of the blood flow from the monitor. On average, testing lasts about 30 to 60 minutes.
