Computerized Dynamic Posturography

For patients who suffer from imbalance, balance disorders, or dizziness, computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) is a noninvasive assessment of what affects your balance. With CDP testing, our neurologists can gain a better understanding of your body’s balance under different conditions – all within the office in a safe, controlled environment.

CDP testing provides valuable insights to neurologists, primary physicians, and other staff who help create complete treatment plans for disorders that affect balance. We can better evaluate motor control, stability, and adaption in a controlled environment. If you’re interested in getting to the root of your balance issues, CDP testing can help.

To schedule an appointment at Neurological Medicine, P.A., use our online appointment request or give one of our two locations a call. We are based in both Greenbelt, MD and Laurel, MD for complete neurological testing and care.

What is CDP Testing

Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP) is a non-invasive, in-office way to help assess patients who have balance issues, dizziness, and vertigo. A controlled platform moves in different directions, at different speeds and amplitudes, to measure how well balance can be maintained under different conditions.

Balance relies on the eyes, our inner ear, and body function. CDP testing helps determine which part of the body is leading to imbalance. Using the platform, we can use CDP testing to assess sensory organization, motor control, stability, and adaption under changing conditions. This lets us know if the senses are affecting balance, if you have reached the end of your movement, if your body knows to create the right movements to correct balance, or if there is an inability to adapt to the changes.

The platform has a plate that records the movements and our computers generate a report of the findings.

What to Expect During a CDP Test

During your computerized dynamic posturography appointment, you will be asked to stand on the CDP platform that will move in different directions, at varying speeds, and amplitudes. You will be wearing a safety harness to avoid any unexpected falls. The test moves through various phases to challenge and test balance, reaction time, and ability to adapt.

You will be asked to maintain your balance to the best of your ability as the platform begins to move. You may be asked to close your eyes, reach for objects, or perform other tasks to challenge your balance. The test will focus on average daily tasks and may vary to pinpoint what is the cause of the imbalance.

The platform records movements and other relevant data. We may assess your center of gravity, ankle strength, hip balance, energy output, and other relevant recordings. CDP testing takes about 30 minutes on average. Some patients may feel dizziness or mild discomfort while challenging their system during the test.

At the end of the test, our neurologists will review the information collected and processed by the platform to evaluate the results and make further treatment suggestions.

CDP Testing Frequently Asked Questions

What is computerized dynamic posturography? Computerized dynamic posturography is a balance test often found in neurological centers and as part of neurological treatments. Using a motorized platform and a safety harness, patients can be assessed in-office to evaluate balance issues, dizziness, and vertigo. It assesses stability, center of gravity, sensory input, inner ear, and reaction speeds to help treat imbalance. What does CDP stand for? CDP stands for computerized dynamic posturography – a test that helps evaluate vertigo, balance, and dizziness for people suffering from imbalance, most commonly from a neurological disorder. What is the purpose of CDP testing? CDP testing helps to determine what is causing balance problems for patients. It allows doctors to assess if the cause is the brain, nerves, joints, inner ear, muscles, limbs, or other factors. It is used for both treatment and diagnosis purposes for complete, thorough patient care in neurology centers.
